Course Description:

The North London Group is delighted to announce the first Urban Excursion, inaugurating a new series of landscape painting workshops dedicated to exploring London's distinctive urban landscape.

Through direct observation and painting, participants will investigate the city's rich visual character—from historic architecture and contemporary skylines to the unexpected presence of nature woven into the fabric of the metropolis. Each workshop will focus on developing observational skills while engaging with London's diverse and evolving cityscape.

The inaugural excursion will explore the surroundings of Highgate and Archway. Working from rooftop viewpoints to the late Victorian streets of Whitehall Park, participants will paint on location over three days, setting up easels at two different sites each day.

Throughout the course, participants will receive a combination of individual tuition and group critiques, providing both personalised guidance and opportunities for shared discussion.

Workshop participants will also enjoy complimentary admission to the Hampstead Art Society lecture on Winifred Nicholson at 6:00pm on Thursday evening in St.James’s. Following the workshop, participants are warmly invited to join the group for drinks at the gallery on Saturday evening.

This workshop marks the beginning of an ongoing series of painting excursions throughout London and will be preceded by an introductory Zoom lecture on Tuesday, 7th July. Later in the summer, the programme will expand beyond the city with a series of day trips exploring landscape motifs in the countryside within easy reach of London.
