Course Description:

This 10-week course focuses on painting and colour.

Students begin with premier coup (one-shot paintings), working from junk-pile still-life setups designed to disrupt habitual ways of seeing. These arrangements foster abstraction, sharpen perceptual observation, and expand compositional awareness.

In the second half of the term, students work from the live model using a similar approach—composing with fragments of form rather than the figure as a whole. This deepens abstraction, challenges preconceptions, and supports the development of an individual visual vocabulary rooted in observation.

Alongside strengthening a geometric understanding of light and form, colour is gradually introduced, encouraging students to integrate drawing with nuanced, perceptually driven colour relationships.

While the course meets weekly, independent practice is essential. Group learning, supported by NLG WhatsApp mentorship, creates a strong environment for sustained exploration.

Open to all levels, this course is best suited to those seeking serious engagement with pictorial language through dedicated practice.
